How to Measure for Products

Actual vs Nominal Measurements

Be sure to measure – not all posts measure the same!
Actual generally refers to rough, untreated wood and vinyl or composite posts.

4×4 Actual fits 4″ x 4″ up to 4.6″ x 4.6″
(The aluminum caps only fit 4″ x 4″.)

6×6 Actual fits 6″ x 6″ up to 6.25″ x 6.25″
(The aluminum caps only fit 6″ x 6″.)

8×8 Actual fits 7.875″ x 7.875″ up 8.125″ x 8.125″
(The aluminum caps only fit 8″ x 8″.)

Nominal generally refers to pressure treated wood.

4×4 Nominal fits 3.5″ x 3.5″ up to 3.75″ x 3.75″
(The aluminum caps only fit 3.5″ x 3.5″.)

6×6 Nominal fits 5.5″ x 5.5″ up to 5.75″ x 5.75″
(The aluminum caps only fit 5.5″ x 5.5″.)

8×8 Nominal fits 7.375″ x 7.375″ up to 7.625″ x 7.625″

Round Post Measurements

Be sure to measure – not all posts measure the same!

To Measure for round post caps, be sure to measure all your deck or dock posts to achieve a nice fit. Take the widest diameter across the top of your deck or dock post.

Caps are made in 1/4″ increments; if your measurement falls in between sizes, it is up to you if you want to round up or down the quarter inch.

For a snugger fit , you may need to remove a small amount of material from your post either by sanding or grinding with an angle head grinder and a rough grit of sandpaper (60) grit.

If you on the size, your caps may be a little loose which can be cured with sizing tape.

Applying a small amount clear caulk is also a nice finishing touch for filling gaps between the post and post cap.
